Automotive industry has an experience of nearly 20 years in using in-car
communication systems. The development started in 1990s with the CAN-Bus.
The infotainment sector in cars has developed rapidly within the last few
years. If, at the beginning, an AM/FM tuner (radio) was sufficient, today
we can hardly think to buy a car ONLY with a radio. Our needs have grown,
because we can access now more information. And, as we know, information
means success. Today, the number of in-car devices has dramatically increased
(CD changer, cell phone, navigation system, TV-DVD and so on). These devices
must interact in concert with each other and can only be controlled via a
central operating surface. The bandwidth of the CAN-Bus is no longer sufficient
for these demands.
MOST (Media Oriented Systems Transport), a
communication system with a new and flexible architecture, used by many different
manufacturers, was developed to meet these demands. It can transmit audio signals
synchronously, as in telephones, and is the most widely used multimedia in-cars
